The Essentials of Drawing Portraits and Figures

In this drawing class, you will learn methods to draw both realistic portraits and human figures. The first three weeks focus on the head and its elements. In the following three weeks, we will address the basics of figure drawing, including finding the correct proportions of the body and dynamically representing poses.

This drawing class builds directly on our Drawing Basics class and is suitable for both beginners and advanced students. The course is also an excellent foundation if you want to establish yourself in fields like fashion design, illustration, and character design.

Class Content

• Eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
• Portrait type likeness
• Proportions and dynamics of the figure
• Rhythm and movement (gesture)
• Drawing portraits and figures from photos

Prerequisites for this class

You should already be able to draw cleanly and understand the proportions of the head. For absolute beginners and returners, we recommend starting with our Drawing Basics class.

Materials for Oil Painting

• Primary colors. For beginners, just black and white are enough.
• A handful of brushes
• No more than 6 small painting surfaces
• Painting medium, sealed container
• Mixing palette
• Paper towels or rags
